Civil society organizations from the Himalaya request your support to save the Himalayas! Prompted by the increasing frequency, scale, and intensity of climate disasters such as landslides and glacier lake outburst floods (GLOFs) in the Himalayan region and the recognition that such disasters compound with historical systemic problems of exploitation and governance failure to especially bring harm to the most vulnerable yet least responsible populations, the People of Himalaya campaign was formed.

The People for Himalaya campaign is an initiative of progressive groups, civil society organizations, and activists from the Indian Himalayan region, which is spread across 13 states and union territories (namely Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura, Assam and West Bengal). They released a declaration in an online press conference last March 30, 2024, demanding a complete moratorium on all mega-infrastructure projects in the High Himalayas and seeking a multi-disciplinary review of the impacts of existing projects. The campaign holds accountable those who profit off resource extraction in the region: countries and financial institutions in the Global North, national and state governments and governance institutions, corporates and contractors. Other demands include strengthening public participation in consultations on large infrastructure, granting communities constitutional, land, and forest governance rights, building accessible agro-ecological livelihoods, and creation of a dedicated disaster response fund. The endorsing organizations vow to work in solidarity for the wellbeing and sustenance of Himalayan natural heritage.
