Socialists against Antisemitism condemns the Green Party’s adoption of its ‘Zionism is racism’ resolution. We are particularly concerned by the rejection of safeguards for Jewish members, including those attending synagogues that identify as Zionist. The consequences for Jewish religious and communal life were explicitly raised. Rejecting those protections demonstrates a serious disregard for the impact on Jewish communities.
The Greens have imposed their own definition of Jewish self-determination on Jews, and now condemn them on the basis of that definition. This doesn’t sound like justice to us.
Zionism encompasses a wide range of political beliefs. Many people who identify as Zionists support Palestinian self-determination, equal rights and an end to occupation. Organisations such as Yachad and the Jewish Labour Movement demonstrate that these commitments can coexist with support for the movement for Jewish self-determination. A blanket equation of Zionism with racism disregards those differences and risks treating people who oppose oppression as supporters of it.
Jewish communities are already facing serious threats, illustrated by Manchester, Bondi Beach and assaults on the streets of London. Political parties have a responsibility to consider how their language and policies may contribute to hostility towards Jews, including people labelled ‘Zionist’ regardless of their actual beliefs. Rejecting explicit safeguards undermines assurances that the resolution will not adversely affect Jewish members.
We stand with Jewish Green members who raised these concerns and with those who supported protections against discrimination. We call on the Green Party to overturn this resolution and explicitly protect members from complaints or sanctions based solely on synagogue membership or participation in Jewish communal life.
A commitment to opposing racism must include protecting Jewish people from discrimination. The Green Party’s leadership must now explain how it will fulfil that responsibility.
