A Life Is a Life, by Elad Nehorai – 7 October 2026

Today marks the anniversary of the worst mass killing of Jews since the Holocaust and the worst mass killing of Israeli civilians ever. This does not need qualification. It does not need to be downplayed or erased or given an asterisk. They were innocent, they were civilians, and each one lost is a divine spark that was snuffed from the world in a horrific and painful way.

That their murders were then used to justify their own horrific mass killing should not then lead to the lesson that their murders count for less. Nor the fact that it was committed in the context of an occupation and subjugation of another people. A life is a life, and there is no reason that compassion for those lost should somehow lessen the loss of others.

It is the opposite. That the loss of 1,200 divine lights led to the loss of 74,200 lives is such an unimaginable horror that it should make us feel their losses are even more tragic. They are now forever tied into those other losses, adding to an already unimaginable mass murder.
